Artist Statement

My favorite subject is movement. As an artist, it's my joy to create it on canvas or paper. Memory and observation are my vantage points. Working in the open air, I capture the spirit of a subject by observing its natural light, shapes, and repetitions with broad brush marks. I focus on the energy of the scene. Bundled in a rash guard shirt, large brimmed hat, fleece jacket, or a down coat, wearing latex gloves over winter gloves, you might see me watching life out by the ocean.

I begin representational and abstract paintings from direct observation. Back in my studio I deepen the work. I feel immersed in memories of the views and sounds of being there. Seagulls do not just fly. They call out. Unique elements become my focus. The challenge becomes to represent the same view with a different focal point, and perhaps with a different emotional response. Nature presents constant change, movement, and adaptation, and so my work requires the same. Artistic expression respects how no two waves, rocks, skies, or impressions are the same.

Acrylics are my usual medium, but sometimes watercolor and guache become mixed media. I often use non-representational pigments. Rocks, sand and water may be blue, pink, purple, yellow, green, umber, ochre, sienna, and grey.

I am an award winning painter with work displayed in galleries and private collections.
